About Me

I’m Ekaterina Kovalenko, a Communication Design student at the HSE Art and Design School, honing my practice in industrial design. My work explores the relationship between expressive form and functionality. I am interested in the character of objects and in finding ways to bring individual pieces together into cohesive collections and systems. I am looking to collaborate with product and furniture brands, as well as design studios, to develop products that combine distinctive visual ideas with thoughtful functionality.

ARC — Furniture Collection

About the Project: ARC is a furniture collection consisting of three pieces: a chair, a wide armchair, and a coffee table. The project explores how individual objects can be united by a shared concept and visual language while preserving their distinct character and functionality.

Problem: How can the fluidity of natural forms be translated into furniture without reducing it to a purely decorative element? The main challenge was finding a balance between expressive silhouettes, structural logic, and the functionality of each piece.Concept: The starting point was the curved forms of pine trunks in the Dancing Forest on the Curonian Spit. I explored three key principles: continuity of line, smooth transitions between elements, and a balance between stability and movement. These principles became the foundation of the collection’s formal language.Result: The concept materializes in three complementary objects: a chair, a wide armchair, and a coffee table. Each piece has its own function and silhouette, while the shared language of flowing lines connects them into a cohesive furniture collection.

Rimal — Sandstone Table Lamp

About the Project: Rimal is a table lamp inspired by the atmosphere of sunlight filtering through sandstone cliffs. Its form resembles a fragment of sandstone with a naturally uneven texture, while a narrow slit running through the body emits a soft, diffused glow.

Original size 3530x2500

Problem: How can the texture and layered structure of sandstone be translated into a lamp while making light the central expressive element? The challenge was to combine the organic character of stone, a tactile material quality, and a warm, diffused glow.Concept: The concept draws inspiration from sand dunes, eroded layers of sandstone, and golden sunlight in the desert. Organic contours, irregular edges, and a narrow slit of light capture the interaction between stone and light, creating a sense of depth and natural translucency.Result: The result is a sculptural table lamp with a body that resembles a fragment of sandstone. A narrow slit becomes its defining visual feature, revealing a contrast between the solid, stone-like form and the soft, diffused light.

Nut Ceramic — Modular Storage Set

About the Project: Nut Ceramic is a series of ceramic containers designed for storing grains, tea, and other dry goods. Developed as part of an academic module focused on creating a ceramic object for the home, the project explores how individual objects can form a unified storage system. Each container functions independently, yet together they create a cohesive arrangement where everything has its place.

Original size 4846x3446

Problem: How can separate storage containers be combined into a functional system while remaining practical as individual objects? The challenge was to develop a simple, intuitive connection mechanism that allows the containers to be stacked vertically with stability.Concept: The concept is inspired by the hex nut—a fastener that connects separate components into a single structure. This idea informs both the geometry of the containers and the way they interact. Recesses in the lids align with corresponding ridges on the bases, allowing the elements to connect and form a cohesive composition.Result: The result is a set of geometric ceramic containers featuring a modular connection system. Each piece can be used independently or stacked vertically with others, transforming everyday storage into an organized and cohesive system of objects.

SIBUR — Desk Organizer

About the Project: The SIBUR Desk Organizer is a desk organizer concept developed for the Object of the Future: SIBUR × HSE design competition. The brief was to develop a concept for a contemporary object utilizing polymers and other materials produced by SIBUR.

Original size 1536x1024

Problem: How can everyday essentials be organized without taking up valuable desk space? The challenge was to create a compact object that utilizes the desk edge while combining accessible storage with a practical hanging function.Concept: The form is inspired by SIBUR’s industrial pipelines—their curved joints, continuous lines, and directional transitions. These features are reinterpreted as a soft, sculptural object for everyday use. The organizer combines an open storage pocket with an integrated lower hook for headphones, bags, or cables. A screw mechanism secures it to the desk edge and adjusts to different tabletop thicknesses.Result: The result is a compact, polymer-based desk organizer that turns the edge of a desk into functional storage space. Its open pocket, integrated hook, and adjustable clamping mechanism help keep everyday essentials organized while leaving the main work surface clear.
