The project was designed by Spanish architect and engineer Santiago Calatrava. Initially, the plan was to build two symmetrical bridges with leaning pylons facing each other; however, due to cost, only one was realized. Construction began in 1989, and the official opening took place on February 29, 1992. Over time, the Alamillo Bridge has become one of Seville’s architectural symbols and an example of a bold combination of engineering and sculptural form.
