From Literary Work to Graphic System

Katya Citrus
The module’s objective is to develop an original graphic language based on a chosen literary work and explore its potential across two project formats: a children’s book and a weekly calendar / weekly planner.
The work will be grounded in the methodologies of communication design: content interpretation, creation of visual systems, narrative management, and adapting graphic solutions to diverse functions and constraints.
The project will be structured as a series of interconnected stages. Each stage will result in a specific intermediate deliverable, which will then serve as material for subsequent design development.
Important! With coordination, you can replace the calendar with another factory project. For example, Object Design, Lamination, or Bag.
Result
— A complete, typeset book (in the factory format).
— A calendar or planner adapted to the factory format.
One selected primary project for the KP, which you will focus on more during the final stage (after the pre-review).
You may use, develop, or omit the typeface you previously created from the new objects. You will also have the opportunity to explore AI tools to grow your own graphic series.
Route Map
1. Graphic language: what might the world of a piece look like?

From reductionism (Geoff McFetridge) to bold visual experimentation (Tereza Ruller)
Artifact 1: Graphic System
We explore different approaches and define the principles for the future series.
The examples below do not illustrate the graphic system within an illustrated book; rather, they present examples of independent graphic series.

2. Series Direction. How do images tell a story?
Connecting narrative structure with discovered graphic language.

Artifact 2. Storyboard: 5–7 Key Images
The narrative logic, compositional sequence, and character of the graphic series are apparent.
Artifact 3. Expanded Graphic Series
Adobe Firefly/LoRa. Developing the series through training AI in one’s graphic language.
Final Artifact 1: Book with 16 Spreads
A fully laid-out book based on the parameters of a factory

Final Artifact 2: Calendar or Planner
Based on the graphics you create, develop the concept for a calendar or planner (adaptation and development). The book and the calendar/planner share the graphic design direction but may differ typographically.

Preview
For the pre-viewing, your graphic series and calendar sketches will be ready. Together, we will decide which artifact moves forward for review (book or calendar/planner).
