Final Qualifying Work: Old Russian Script: Educational Practices in Mastering Poluustav and Vyaz
The final project presents a series of educational and practical workshops dedicated to ancient Russian writing systems—poluustav and vyaz. Participants first familiarize themselves with the historical and visual context through lectures, then move on to the practical mastery of calligraphy: studying the construction of glyphs, rhythm, proportions, letter connections, and compositional specifics.

Idea

Experiment with various writing tools and materials—broad and fine nibs, brushes of different widths, wooden sticks, and other writing implements—while observing how they affect the character of the line and the visual perception of the script.
Relevance
The relevance of this project stems from the popularization of ancient Russian written culture and the search for contemporary methods for its study and preservation. Mastering the semi-ustav and vyez through workshops fosters a deeper understanding of historical principles in letter construction, develops an interest in calligraphy, and opens opportunities for integrating history with modern artistic and design practices.
Classroom
Young adults aged 18–35 interested in visual culture, art history, graphic design, typography, and calligraphy.
— Students in fine arts and creative fields — Graphic and typeface designers — Calligraphers and artists — Lovers of history and culture — Individuals without formal art training
Event Format and Structure
My proposal is not to hold one large masterclass, but an educational cycle consisting of several sessions. This way, participants can gradually move from becoming acquainted with the history of writing to practicing independently.
Space
For the project, a small educational or cultural space will suffice: a workshop, library, or art space. It is important that the space includes long worktables with individual stations where writing materials can be placed.
